Nazi Punks, FUCK OFF - Dead Kennedys |
] |
For a little while there, groups of little kids doing music tried to
shock you. We've had Hanson (the androgenous little funksters), TaTu
(the russian lesbian breakbeat popsters now pimping their second album)
and Hampton The Hampster (No wonder John Denver died...). But in this
age of Schnappi and the Crazy Frog, is there any way we can get little
kids back into the mainstream, to beat the ringtone artists that the
little kids themselves are funding, in an oh so vicious circle?
Yes. Yes we can.
Now
im gonna give you a link, and this isnt to their official site, more my
favourite entry on their blog... but you have to check out Prusian
Blue, whos latest album "Blonde Hair and Blue Eyes" dropped a while
ago, and these 11 year old Californain white supremacist chickies are
tearing up stages run by american bogans left all over the north
american continent...
So click
here and see what the little girls, Lynx and Lamb, who list one of
their primary concerns as "Not enough white babys getting born" look
like, and where you can buy their merch...
Strangely, this amuses me no end, yet Pauline Hanson being on Ginger Snack commericals really really made me scream with terror. ________________________________
The
art school ball was a massive success. Thankyou to everyone that i saw
there, and whilst i diddnt have much fun whilst we were playing, it
turned out that it sounded much better out the front of house than it
did over the foldback, so i shouldnt have been too concerned.
Sunday
was nice, I slept, bathed, met up with Bec, Nick and Suze for a beer,
which led to more beer at suzies, and a casual walk home.
Anyway, now back to shitting myself about Stonefest. _____________________________________ On that note...

ANYONE here have a high speed innernet conncection that i could come

Basically, when i started mixing, my mate Mezla and I were all about the prog...
Since then ive deviated somewhat from the path, now probably falling
into the electro/hip hop/indie dj column, and Mez has packed it in...
But for a change (working out that i haddnt played prog in public in
about 2 years or so), we combined record boxes, and i got to learn the
whole prog mixing thing again (REQUIRES SO MUCH PATIENCE OMG)
anyway, heres what we played (yes, im showing off...)
Jay J & Chris Lum – Producer Envy
Jon Carter – Go Down (Deep South Official Mix)
Land Between Grooves – Electricity
Chris Lum – Big Tool
Rulers Of The Deep – Dirty Grooves
Hamel & Blackwatch – Discotek
Origine – Sanctuary (The Traveller remix)
Quest – Bitter & Twisted (Luke Chable’s Dirty Funktrain remix)
Polefolder & CP – Dust (James Zabiela’s Dakota Bar slam)
Ben Burns & Void – Smooth To Touch
Kosheen – Hungry (Satoshi Tomiie Vocal mix)
Yunus Guvenen – Red Pilot
Tone Depth – Rumble Fish
Lemon 8 – New York, New York
Bluephaze – What Is Music? (Quest remix)
North Atlantic – Lights Out (Lemon 8 ‘Lights On’ mix)
Carl Cox – Space Calling
Ova – Sublimation (DJ Who rmx)
George Jung – Get Together (21st Century Fux mix)
Adam Dived – Headfirst
Shmuel Flash – Chilling Moments (Bedrock Vocal mix)
Arrakis – Aria Force (Lemon 8 remix)

We left at about 2:30, with a car full of stuff – turntables, mixer,
virtual amp, aa battery powered amp, electric guitar, makeup kit,
chains, weird leather chain things, fur coats, leather vests, bullet
belts, sequined sparkly scarves, and a pile of cds.
The
trip up was best shown from the music that got played. Normally
cruising around in Shredders black rock machine, it’s a glam and nu
metal fest only, but for a long trip I was sure as shit not going to
let that happen *all the way*. First up was The Brides Of Destruction
and their new, Nikki Sixx-less disc, which is notable for having a glam
metal tribute to country music on it, but apart from that sounds really
like early Guns n Roses. After that, Motley Crűe got a run, with their
second album, and following that (memories of nicks party aplenty!), I
slapped on Refused – The Shape Of Punk To Come. Rocking that shit all
the way to the outskirts of Sydney, it was then time for some Secret
Chiefs 3, which I hadn’t heard in ages and must get a copy of myself…
and then for the drive around to find our accommodation to the
astounding Twin Cinema by The New Pornographers.
We ended up on
Riley St, near 77, and hiked it all the way up to near Oxford St, where
Tegan, the girl who booked us and the one putting us up for the night
lived. We were presented with a massive share house with 9 rooms, two
staircases and a transient population of anywhere between 4 and 20
people. Dumping our stuff in, we sat around, talking chop until the
Hancock boys eventually made their way up to the house as well – we
wandered along and got some indian for dinner, but given time
constraints, we had to rush back. We got in, found a rudimentary table,
and set up, sadly facing the foldback issues that plague our gigs so
often. Come 9:30 and the doors hadn’t opened yet, Bec and Nick had
arrived, so I ushered them in the back, and then we had to run away and
do our makeup.
The lead in dj was Tegan, pumping out mostly
electro 80’s stuff, from PIL to Flock Of Seagulls. Bec and Louise were
sitting down, but I couldn’t go over them and face them to talk,
because the Suicide Girls dvd was playing on the massive screen they
were sitting under, and it was remarkably distracting, so happily they
came over and spoke to me on their own accord after a while.
Around
11 we got up and played, and we were ok – Marcus was putting a fair bit
of head banging in, and whilst the crowd didn’t initially seem to know
what was going on, by the time we whipped out the two killers – the
Jump Around and the Move Your Feet, everyone was happy and there were
smiles abound.
Hancock Basement kicked off straight after and
put on another blisteringly good display – three songs was all that was
needed from Mel Spectrum to be demanding a recording, and with Craven
belting out a Portishead cover, Tom going overtime on the hats, and
Nick BW whipping out the sax to much better effect than they did at Ug
that time, everyone had fun.
We listened to Ash playing
electro for a while, and packed up, and left, for myself, Marcus and
Louise to hold court in taylor square proper till probably 4:30 in the
morning.
Driving back the next morning, it was more NP’s, the
brilliant Cheer Leader Death Metal Zydeco of Estradashpere, the
picaresque Decemberists, and the trip was ended with Kiss – Dynasty.
I
was actually relieved to get back to Canberra. For reasons that I think
I better explained to people yesterday, for the first time I got quite
worried about moving to Sydney. Which, incidently, looks like happening
in three weeks or so. Fuck. Anyway, up there, people are WAY trashier
than they are in Canberra, and I really don’t want to fall into an even
more wasted place than I am already in…
I’m sure it will be ok, but yeah, damn.
Yesterday
was fun – new family guys bookended barbeques with new friends –
massive props to the awesome Liz Metal and American Steph, as well as
Marisa’s Robin for all the free beer, and the gorgeous Lisa who didn’t
kill me for messily and publicly falling in gushing love with her.
Rule #98912 – Al, when you are drunk, you aren’t as pretty as anyone, especially not her.

Toxic Liptstick - Mumz Not Home |
] |
I had a million experiences and flashbacks yesterday. There was good
old summer, dancing around on my front lawn, wearing sunglasses and
smoking cigarettes and having cool drinks. There was Jiah. There was
progressive house classics being played over the stereo, with Mezla and
Ruffy cramped into my kitchen, Mixing Pad stylee.. There was steak from
a steak house (first one in probly 6 months). There was youthfully
exuberant pop punk by the talented beyond their years Zero Degrees & Falling.
There was Mez and Cazz and Moxey and Katherine and Milo, all sitting
around a table down the Aree Bar. There was looking for a trolley for
my records, and there was Nick and some British girl. And there was
some self-righteous 18 year old. And there were tears, and missing
friends, late at night. All I really need now is pouring rain, and a
beautiful girl to kiss, and maybe I could be happy for a while.
________________
The other band that played last night were the amazing stoner rock bogan thing from Bateman’s Bay - The Hippy Killas. Their
manager, a kind o taller, balder, bigger beer bellied version of David
Boon, wearing a Ford t-shirt, came up to me and said "ill give you a
signed copy of our cd if you play a song off it".
I said ok, but
only because he assured me that it starts with an amazing V8 rumbling
or some such car talk. Apparently one of their next songs is going to
grounbreakingly have a massive aeroplane jet engine rumbling in it. The
guy reckons they are going to be massive. It was pretty funny.
I
then played some Queens Of The Stoneage, and some dude at the back of
the bar screamed loudly with joy, exclaiming that "OMG! HES PLAYING
MUSIC THAT DOESNT SUCK!!!!!!!!" __________________

actually awesome as well music. Oh and definitely some Toxic

G7 dick electro boogie - Regurgitator |
] |
I know you guys remember the start of the anti-globalisation movement, captured beautifully in Regurgitator’s "G7 Dick Electro Boogie" off their Tu-Plang album? You know, the one with the lines like
"If I were the third world my ass'd be numb from the fucking", "Thanks for the aid now I pay you back triple, business as usual - gang rape a cripple", "Cant feed the kids but would you like a cup of coffee?"...
Well my favourite line in that whole song was the brilliant “The IMF are Insane Mother Fuckers", especially as I was living in South East Asia at the time, and could see the IMF on their barnstorming Asian tour with full rock star hair, big rigs carrying even bigger cannons of fireworks and inflatable pigs, sold out concerts wherever they went, politicians and the public alike hanging on their every word, and bowing to their every whim and fancy. It was full take over the world type antics. Well, a fair bit has changed since then, mainly that the wind has kind of been knocked out of the arrogant IMF's sails, all nicely detailed in a one of those articles that make me happy I sometimes flip to the business pages... This from the International Herald Tribune.
But whats more disturbing of late, as far as I’m concerned, is the World Health Organisations attempts to become the new "super world body", and noticing that they could blow SARS completely out of proportion for fun & profit - SARS being a pneumonia-like virus that claimed the lives of 1000 people a few years back now, primarily in Hong Kong, which currently loses 10 000 people a year to regular pneumonia - have decided to do the same thing with the Bird Flu. And our government is willing to play the game - having Mr Abbot out there beating this thing up into a frenzy - sure only 60 people (all of who contracted the disease by having exceedingly close contact with the birds) have died worldwide, but it hasn’t stopped him telling all the media that 12000 - 50000 would be the likely death toll if the bird flu got to Australia, mutated to be spread by humans and became a pandemic. And that we don’t have nearly enough of the vaccine or whatever in our stockpile for even most of the essential staff.
This is all of course ignoring that fact that its chances of mutating, spreading and causing this "pandemic" are about the same as winning lotto. Its not going to happen. Its just not.
I knew I had to go and check stuff with my dad.
"Dad! There’s a massive false market being made at the moment by the WHO and the Liberal Government... Bird Flu vaccine will be in hot demand now, even though it will probably never ever ever be needed" "Don't worry, when i first heard about it, i bought some stock in the vaccine makers at 24c, and just today it hit $1.93" "Excellent" "Oh and look at this - they have sent me a letter saying that they have made a whole bunch of stock available to existing shareholders at beginning of September prices - that’s only 70c each!" "Global fear and terror, it pays to be 1 step ahead of the game huh Dad..." "If we aren’t going to die from this bird flu, we might as well make money off it"
Indeed.

So once the devestation cleared, it turned out that everything will go
back to the way it was, which to tell you the truth, isnt all that
satisfactory, but hey, they probably want it that way. I need to find a
way to get $210 by Thursday without selling any of the BMA cds ive been
stockpiling, because aparantly BMA now wants them back, mother fuckers.
So i think i might give them back half of them, the like bad ones that
noone would want to buy, and then sell the other lot. Selling cds
however seems like such total tragedy... And besides... i love bad cds
as well as good ones... Anyway Lady Soverign "Random"
The Roots Manuva/Hermitude
show on Saturday night was off the charts good. Canberra's scene points
tally dinged like 9 levels in one fell swoop, to the point that even DJ
Artemis was axe-ing me to make her come to more of these things (if
just because she liked lots of the hipster boys...). Headed over to Beat Off afterwards, and good work from Bass Kleph, Typhonic and Rookie One made me happy, but too much beer made me leave to drink goon with wasted thespians. Dropped by Dez & Markys on the way home, and that was quite fun.
Seemed
to get too little sleep, and sadly all of my friends were equally as
wrecked as we got to Tilleys for the Freedom Fest, that due to cultural
differences got mucked around quite a bit. It would have been nice had
i had some energy to work off but my broke ass got sick from drinking
too much water for the second time that day and wandered home to curse
the Brazillian GP for being in such a retarded timezone, meaning that
it wouldnt be my happy dose of midnight entertainment...
Oh yeah, and we can scrap The Drummatic Twins from the must see list at PL, way too poppy... clever, just too much broad appeal for me to like it///
Had
crazy dreams last night, and also about having to take someones Muzak
devotion seriously as not to offend their every being, and help them
furthur the cause or something. And yeah, pretty crazy good nastyness
from my next door neibour as well... It was good, but then i woke up.

J-Roc - Trailer Park Life |
] |
The joys of being at home are ending, for this week at least.
From the net based ones - broadband, late night chats and bash.org battles with Nicktimus, far too much time wasted on memes and whatnot, and finding out trivial but interesting stuff - such as Bec's JJJ mix goes for exactly the same amount of time as the critically acclaimed Raiko healing cd that Merlins Magic released 10 years ago, or that the girl in that episode of Law & Order : Criminal Intent the other day really was the same girl who played Joy in Happiness... Shopping with a car. Watching a million and one tv channels - i got to see film clips i had wanted to, but most importantly Trailer Park Boys...
Tomorrow i get on a bus and go back. I have little to worry about. My rent is paid. The play will be good. The world wont explode.
Ill be back up here on thursday to go to a drag show of all things. Friday will be Purple Sneakers with Louise, and Sunday will be Parklife. A Saturday day trip to Newcastle to see Funcarma and The Suicide Girls exhibition would be dope, but we will see.
I cant believe im not going to the Redman/Method Man/DJ Kool/Rahzel/DJ Premier show. I am terminally wack.

Tipper - Ruck |

Its weeks like this that make me glad I'm alive.
Im flittering around a town lost in a confusing buzz - from pop princesses to weekend indie kids, Sydney has decided to chuck a Canberra, and back a winner. Given that the tribunal looked kindly upon Sydney Swans captain, Barry Hall, and diddnt suspend him for punching someone in the guts last game, all is on track up here for a triumph on the weekend, as the Rugby town sends its team down to beat a West Australian team at the home of airial ping-pong, Melbourne. And its fantastic - everyone up here is getting into the swing of things, even though virtually none of them were an expert on Australian Rules football before the last quarter against the Saints on Friday night. Its like a miniture Sydney 2000 vibe really, but maybe im just nostalgic for the one time I saw this city really shine.
Sydney during the Olympics was an electrically good time. It was a time of relative innocence for me - I remember being crammed into the manning bar, agreeing with Liz that we were "so damn sick of this song" when the Timo Mass remix of Azzido Da Bass's "Dooms Night" got played, well before its useby date (that came at the end of the summer, a good six months later). I remember Katie A and I deciding that we would be drum and bass djs, just so we could be the Matt & Kayla of Canberra. I remember Cameron Webb, and his complete lack of abillity to save some of his cigarettes/alcohol/whatever for later, and getting as wasted as possible, as soon as possible, as often as possible. I remember Utopia's at Australia's Wonderland. I remember walking along the street with a discman, enthralled by "When The Pawn Hits..." for the very first time. I remember cases of beer drunk watching front end loader washing machines. Infact, to quote the legendry Waldo completely out of context... "You remember Mambo No5??? I remember YOU".
Things have changed. Theres no way either Liz or I would be at Sublime@Manning these days. Dooms night has gone through like 5 kitch/over-it/wow this is awesome and back again cycles. Katie now lives with a better dj than me, and doesnt want to do it herself. Who knows where Cam Webb is? Wonderland has closed down, and Utopias are for people 10 years younger than me. Fiona Apple is just about to release her amazingly long delayed third album. Chris is overseas. And jumping on the Swans bandwagon wont quite rouse the feelings like it did to Tim Freedman, when he noted "My city is a whore, thats opened its legs to the world, jumped up and down in pastel shirts, and lathered up thinking about designs for t-shirts... youve gotta love this city for its body and not its brain..."
In 2000 i was one year back from being overseas. This afternoon, i travelled out to the airport to put my sister and her friend on a plane to the light fantastic. Stop over in Singapore, to be sure, where she is going to hang with her best friends sister, and participate in an over 30 populated Rockstar INXS finale party. Seeing her off were my bewildered parents, Bens tight knit but amicable family, a teary Erin, a more robust Brynn, a silent hates goodbyes Saouri, her brother, a Groove and a James. Lunch was excellent by all accounts, and not too many tears were shed. She is going to have an excellent time, and no doubt Europe will be a much less safe place now that Isabel and Ben are on their way.
Following that I came back home and conducted an interview, scheduled to be Ajax, but pointing out to him in the first second that he wasnt actually playing the Canberra leg of Bang Gang's Ministry Of Sound Mashed 2 complilation launch tour, he handed me over to the amicable Gus Da Hoodrat. Kind of like a cheekier version of milkbar_nick, Gus and me had a pretty nice chat about the ins and outs of running a different, but important party. Being weekly, im not sure how long their lives will be, but when they are in town im sure we will have a great time.
But with a skip in my step, I quickly headed out the door and across to Newtown. I can never really get there soon enough, and the 50 or so minutes it took to travel there dragged. But soon enough I was camped outside Newtown train station, and tentatively crossing the road was the one that I had come to visit, my darling Beccy P. Speaking my language, we had hugs, beer and chats. Louise called and wanted to hook up, so as Bec and I went off to eat (at a really magical Sushi Train place), Lou trekked in from Marrickville and met up with us for a beer or two post dinner.
Going back to Bec's place, she ran me through her astonishing (as per usual) JJJ mix-up set, which will go to air this Saturday night, and showed off a whole heap of her new records as well... I went through my recent order
Gorillaz - Dare (DFA mix) (Parlophone, 2005) 12" Sleater Kinney - Jumpers (Sub Pop, 2005) 7" Maximo Park - Graffiti (Warp, 2005) 7" Gossip / Tracey & The Plastics - Split (Dim Mak, 2005) 7" Blues Explosion - Crunchy (Mute, 2005) 12"
And can i just add that looking at their website, Dim Mak has to be one of the coolest record labels like EVAR...
All of my records i ordered above are shit hot, especially the DFA remix of Blues Explosions "Mars Arizona". Yes.
Anyway, its not records, or buzzing towns, that make me glad im alive... its warmth from friends. From having my head pressed against that of many other on Sunday afternoon, to the happy and heartfelt hugs from my homegirls Bec and Lou tonight, i get the feeling that people would cry for me in an airport too, but also send me away knowing that i was doing the right thing. Luckily you dont have to cry just yet.

Coming up we have a fantastic weekend. I would be most happy if as many of you as possible could make it along to the Gorman House on Friday night for One Night Only, the play that has captured the hearts and minds of the population at large, and will have its concluding performance to include me in it on that day. On Saturday night, Hermitude are joined by the fantastic Roots Manuva at the ANU Bar, and Tilleys is the place to be Sunday eve. _____________________

One of the acts im most looking forward to checking out at stonefest is Soma Rasa, if only for the reason that they collaborated with Digital Underground this year to bring us close to Australia's first real crunk song, "Say What You Want". It also has quite a clever video... so turn up the bass and check this out.
If you havent heard of Decoder Ring yet, then you will be in for a shock. One of the few bands that can make a festival stage sound like you are in a club with the Ring playing and thats it... Their brilliant combination of post rock, no wave and progressive electronica and jazz meld brilliantly to give music that you feel within your veins, not just your ears. One for both the resume and the side of stage action, they are reason number 5 that stonefest this year is a smashing event.
I dont need to tell anyone any more really about Faker, except that they really really really are a cross between The Cure and Hunters & Collectors, and that is a startlingly good combination.
And of course, i get to open for the lovely and talented Bec Paton, who they are importing back down from Sydney, and sure ive played on the same bill as her a million times, it doesnt change the fact she is the best damn dj in the world...

Ash - A Life Less Ordinary |
] |
Today as I clicked around on the net, i inserted cds into the drive and got iTunes to "Import" them, for two reasons. Firstly, it means they will be on this computer and ill have something to listen to as i use the innanet in the future. But really im vaguely hoping that Isabel is yet to fill her iPod for her trip, and that it could well do with having stuff like The Cops, Supergrass, Placebo and Ash on it. So hopefully she will one day slap it on random, and Foxtrot Yankee, Girl From Mars, Scared Of Girls and Sun Hits The Sky come out, and Isabels indie cred at whatever part of Europe she will be in will go up a few oh-so-valuable scene-points.
When i move up here, im going to have to get a bigger hard drive and probably a dvd burner, as this wi-fi broadband action will undoubtably demand that i take advantage and start building the collection of Family Guys, American Dads and other happy shows that the modern humour lover with the innanet invariably must attain.
Today has been releatively unevenful - i havent seen all that much of my sister, but i havent really seen all that much of anyone. It was a shame, but not totally inconveniant, to have my plans for tonight dashed by a text message earlier in the day, hopefully though the trip to the lolly manufacturing plant can happen tomorrow evening instead. So tonight will be dinner, as Erin Moss comes to join my family as we sit around, devour a roast chicken, and imagine what life without Isabel in the country will be like. It sounds like they are well sorted out - they have a flat they can use rent free in Edinburgh untill March, and by then im sure une Isable will be more than ready to be hitting the continent...
Tomorrow at 6:15pm i have a chat with DJ Ajax, which should be a bit of fun, it would have been nice had it not been Ajax but instead one of the lesser djs such as Gud Da Hoodrat or whatever they are called, from sydneys notorious and wildly popular Bang Gang fashonista crew. Bang Gang intruiges me... the music they play is kind of on the right track, but misses the mark pretty much every time. They order in which they present their music has much more to do with faux hawks and stocks-punk than actuall punk or even clash stylings, and so its no wonder that im interviewing them in relation to two things - the release of their Ministry Of Sound compilation cd, as well as their second appearnace of the year at the terminally safe Friction nights. Let it never be said that im precious about the image that electro had/could have had/should have had etc... its just that it would have been so much better on the phone tomorrow to be talking to a dj who isnt actually very good, as opposed to the remarkably talented Ajax..
My weekend was a disjointed mess. From Cheese On Toast to One Night Only, to a fantasticly trashy party, i had for the most part an excellent time. Most of my friends were on their best behavior, and noone hurt themselves too badly. Cheese will be the death of us though. I played Scatman, Britney and Spice Girls. One Night Only... more on that later. Birthday parties make me want to destroy televisions.

Tomorrow, come and see the AWESOME One Night Only at Gorman House C Block Theatre, from 8pm. Then see another installment of the brilliant and critically aclaimed versus sets from hell ALISTAIR $B$ ROOKIE ONE
at Beat Off : Awesome Edition, as the undisputed two best dj's in
canberra go head to head, side by side and left, right, up down and
diagonal to bring a mashup of drum and bass, jungle, prefuse 73, house,
bootlegs and other party style lovelyness... Argue with your friend
over what is better - LK, Up All Night or Shake Yr Body, all the mean
time wondering where the hell al got that fucking Abba Drum and Bass
Remix on pink vinyl...
And then kidreptile's Birthday Partay.
Spoon were quite good, kind of the masters of totally innoffensive indie pop.
Found out that The New Pornographers wont be on the Big Day Out bill. Shame.

Right
now that you have had time to kill me in your minds, repeadedly... and
if you havent, just read that again. And again. Hold on, i should be
drawing attention to it...
Best things that have happened this week...
Listening to "The Very Best Of Nancy Sinatra" made me smile, even if one of the new songs is a Kasey Chambers cover. Finding "Illegal Communications : A Battle Between Hip Hop and Elektronika". OMFG. Getting a copy of Mashed. Now all i need is another Xbox controller. Nathan
and Cazz getting engaged made me happy, as did seeing lots of kids
eating Au Lac in celebration, and then us getting Goodberrys (actually
now Rubees)
I thought of mentioning The Plot To Blow Up The
Eiffell Tower, but i just saw photos of two people i miss standing on
the top of it, so it might be ominous to do so.

Glam Radness Accused of Heinous Self Indulgence, Kettle alleges Pot is infact opaque
Its long, but pretty awesome. (the end of it is all Glam Radness-ey)
You know youve made it when someone on their allegedly slightly commercial blog slags you and your favourite bands artwork out.
