Whinging about whinging on the weekend

Last night, I got angry. Upset. Whingey.

I suppose I was pretty tired. I had been a long weekend.

It all started with pizzazz on Thursday night with Max-Rock-A-Dansky, at Toast. An astoundingly worthwhile night actually. As Jemist and I played the warm up songs (Jem being a lot softer than last time), Young & Restless set up. And then (albeit a little way too loudly) rocked out. Sure they only really have four songs, but Karinas screaming is getting better, the band is getting tighter, and their party song, probably entitled "I Dont Wanna Go Home" is truely awesome.
After faffing around for a bit, Damn Arms came on, and oh my. Good tight dance punk with a hint of the new wave britpop thrown in for good measure, their drummer is phenomenal and the other players compliment that entirely. Mark my words kids, if that band sticks together long enough, they will be the biggest thing in Australia. Truely amazing.

This Night Creeps werent as good as Damn Arms, but their art punk bashings did me well, and then Jem left me to play music till everyone pissed off. I enjoyed playing Brisk whilst the band was in the club, if just so they could experience their song being played in a club (it had to happen sometime, right?). It was also lovely to meet properly [info]chlonline, and catch up with the ever enthusiastic Rachels (they both rock my world). Infact there was a nice selection of the indie kids in attendence, and i was happy. Kicked on to the phoenix just as Lang showed up to have a bit of a play around, and then shot the shit with the emo kids for a bit, eventually got back to Ainslie and then off to sleep.

Friday was meant to be quiet, Farewell Karoke styles for Palu. And it was good - i did a hideously falsetto version of Take Thats Back For Good, Catherine chimed in with a lovely My Heart Will Go On, and Palu took the cake with his phenomenal Asian Idol version of Crazy In Love...Then I was called in to work at Toast. I did it, it was a pretty good night. Moh Van Wah were finnishing off, and they are quite the rock gods now, it was nice to see. It was also nice to not clear the place as soon as i started playing. About a 4 hour set, I played the gammut - from rock, to indie, to hip hop, to funk, to breaks (for ages), to slip in a bit of progressive, back to funk, then back to indie (mainly to make the very jovial [info]genericteen et al dance - and play the obligatory Supergrass song, as well as double up on the addictive "Something White & Sigmund" and get a bit more Sleater Kinney out of the speakers..)

The awesome Cass drove me home, but on the way we detoured via Lot and caught the last half hour of Sharam Jey who seemed quite nice, though i did get rather annoyed about people going "This dj is so awesome he played the originals of RATM and Nirvana and stuff OMGWTFBBQ"... but maybe people dont do that at Lot... The bloke who came on afterwards was someone ive never seen before, and the only thing that really stood out was that he was playing not bad, but not the best, remixes of everything (although he did drop that heinous Pump Up The Jam remix... ewwwwww...). Luckily it turns out he djs at some house club in sydney, so ill never be exposed to that again.
Falling alseep infront of Rage, i did get to witness for the second time the new Backstreet Boys single, and i dont know how it would go without the film clip, but it is pretty damn awesome... Yes. AWESOME. Or maybe ive just been drunk and tired whenever ive seen it, but i hope it gets to #1 so it can win the Al Award...

And so onto last night.

I watched football - happy to see the Melbourne Storm beat the Broncos, radirah... but then it was time to go to Toast for the competition. It turned out that Paqman had been put back to a later time than us, and that was quite disapointing, especially coz all their shit was set up on our stage... As far as the djs went, none of them really impressed me that much except for the exuberant DavyG, but Karuna, Incongruous and Mike Shannon all impressed. I do, however, question these young djs... When presented with a theme, run with it! Its so much easier when you know what you have to do ... the theme is "Dark & Dirty", and well, for some of these guys, if they were following the theme, then they need to get a lot darker and a lot dirtier, soon... and if they werent, then you suck.

For our half hour Glam Radness set, we pulled out most of the stops, there was glitter, party poppers, rocking guitar, slamming beats, screaming crowds and the ultimate highlight - me lighting the sparkler in the end of marcus's guitar, that in turn set fire to one of the glowsticks he had in there, causing quite simply the most rock and roll thing to ever happen on stage... Thats right kids. Sparkler sticking out of guitar causes glowstick in guitar to catch on fire.

How could anything that downright AWESOME not win.

Well it was because of two little kids with lots of nice toys that played probably the best set of progressive and breaks live i have ever witnessed at Toast, and this shat me to tears. Why couldnt they have sucked like they were meant to? WHY COULDNT THEY?
Dont worry guys, Paqman will be coming to an Ug Beats near you, very soon. They were outstanding, and will go so so so far.

So i was in a terrible mood for the rest of the night, being the sook that i am, and only seeing the arse end of Andre Aggasi getting through to the final cheered me up enough to sleep. It was really poor form on my part, and to anyone I whinged and bitched and moaned to, im sorry, Karaoke was the night before, and i diddnt mean to keep impersonating Jeff Buckley.

Late night tv, singing take that and music

I have, for the last few weeks, dipped back into an old habit of mine... Late night tv. Whilst i still havent found another "Freedom", and definately no Freaks And Geeks, i have fallen for the charms of a Canadian show about a law firm of all things... The Associates. Now it turns out that Im quite sure ive just watched the last episode (sadly, they only made one season), but if not, Wednesday nights, an hour before The Sullivans is the place to be on Channel 9/WIN whatever... The character development, interesting motives and smashing interplay between all of the young gun lawyers dealing with actually interesting cases, make for compelling viewing. Unlike so many shows that occur before midnight, you actually become friends with these guys, and dreamily care about what they are going through. Akshelly, the glorious YourTV says it will, so thankfully they arent playing them in order... Do it.

Since we last spoke, I went and had a nice milkshake with Tom Hancock and Deg Phoenix, that led to me getting reminded to come along to The Church for Tueday night Karaoke coz on top of it being Nick C Hancocks birthday, it was indeed my sisters.
It was trashy fun - there were a million beers bought for me by Annettes boss who wanted to get into her pants. I sang "Back for good" by Take That and a really pretty girl stopped me at the bar and told me i had a nice voice. I told stories of karaoke in far away places, and a gorgeous ex model with and engagment ring on her finger told me New York is the best place to do it, because you can BYO grog... I ended trapsing through the streets of Ainslie, Dickson and Lyneham drunker than normal at about 2am, and sleeping soundly.
Yesterday was a day of nothing productive, and it was all i could do to make this day not like that.

I have decided that NBA Y2K4 is really quite shit. It diddnt stop me and Mox watching a demo game of my fantasty, 2011 LA Clippers destroying the Seattle Supersonics. Never again.

Todays playlist

Bedrock - Heaven Scent (Pobs Seismix)
Alanis Morrisette - You Learn (2005 Accoustic rerelease)
Sleater Kinney - The Woods
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema

Tonights playlist, (AT MAX-ROCK-A-DANSKY) hopefully, will include

The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, The Scare, Less Than Jake, NOFX, The Dead Kennedys, Bloc Party and My Disco!
and if the wonderful [info]chlonline brings me songs, then ill play them and watch her dance and it will be nice.

OH AND IN LATE BREAKING NEWS

Massive congratulations to our dear friend Palu who has just landed a job as sub-editor of Oyster and is moving to Sydney!
Ill do a palu dedication post soon...

so i might do the mirroring thing

One of the best whim record purchases I've made in the last year is Love Outside Andromeda's self titled debut long player. It came from a night of watching Rage over at [info]mezla's house, you know, back in Boolee. There were a number of smashing videos that night, but the most intense one was a clip by this Australian band i had heard of, but never heard. And the music was tough, and her voice was great, and this was all the indie i needed. I picked up their special tour edition album, which came with the "Something White & Sigmund" EP at Landspeed, and it gets about a run a fortnight.
I dont know what shes on about, most of the time. I actually havent spent any time to listen to the lyrics. But the way her voice dances over the sensibibly pop inclined indie rock band that backs her is remarkable, especially for the fact that i glean great meaning and direction from those fragments of riffs and verses and bridges that are filed in my head, and triggered, like sounds on a computer, whenever the right button is pushed.

One thing that I knew i wouldnt have a problem with is the gorgeous "Twin Cinema" by The New Pornographers. Like the other records by them, it really hits its strides in the middle of the disc, but like all the others, it doesnt mean the first parts are bad. I am still convinced that AC Newman is the single best songwriter in the world today, and by the time it clicks over to "Sing Me Spanish Techno" you are sold. The guy from Pitchfork is right too - the real star of this record is the uninhibited rhythmn section, so aparant, yet so enjoyable. Do yerself a a favour kids, and get this one as well.

I was all hoping to go to the movies sometime this week, but Im not sure if I will get the chance. Is there anything worth seeing at the pictures these days?

Anyway, im actually getting quite psyched about the show on Thursday night. This Night Creeps and Damn Arms, along with the phenomenal Young & Restless with Jemist playing lots of mean arsed hardcore, and myself softening the blows with a nice amount of pop punk and dance punk and post punk and other stuff to take the edge of Jems stuff...
And it turns out that on Saturday, Glam Radness will be competing one of the heats for the four to the floor dj comp, ill let you know what time and stuff when I know myself.
