Sep. 1, 2005 - Must...fight.....stereotypes....

There ya go Kimbi. I have nothing to blog about.....but here goes.....

The other day at work, I walked up to a customer and said
"Hello, can I help you with anything?"

"No thanks, I can read"  he snivelled back.

"Alright then".

I walked away breathing deeply. My work friends saw my face and started going "What happened?". I told them about this twat and calmly they said "Elissa, go for a lap of the store and calm down". They are all aware that I have a bit of a short temper so this was wise.

I came back from my wander somewhat calmer but seeking revenge. On my walk I thought of so many good comebacks with nothing but term of my employment standing in my way

"No thanks I can read"

"Well thank goodness you're not as stupid as you look then!"

"No thanks I can read"

"I didn't ask if I could help you, I said YOU HAVE THE FUCKING UGLIEST HEAD IVE EVER SEEN. I BET THEY GAVE YOU A PAPERBAG INSTEAD OF A BIRTH CERTIFICATE WHEN YOU WERE BORN"

"No thanks I can read"

"Really? Good for you, because I couldn't help but notice your South African accent and statistics show that there is more chance of being raped than being literate in your country. But then again, who in their right mind would want to rape you. You're quite possibly the most disgusting excuse for a human being I have ever experienced in my whole life. Ahh well, you were either going to be stupid or completely lacking any sense of social graces. I think we know which one it is!"

"No thanks I can read"

"Oh wow! You were rude AND you're South African. I'm really suprised by that. I mean, afterall, with the way your country has treated human beings in the past and the way the rest of the world responded (you know those old things called Trade Embargos?) that you're without the ability to be even remotely polite. You know how you can read? Here is a book on etiquette. I bet all the material contained within will be incredibly new to you".

"No thanks I can read"

"Well good for you. It's just a shame that you must be so dreadfully insecure about every other facet of your life other than your literacy that you have to be so completely rude to someone offering you help. It would be a real shame if your testicles became gangrenous and fell off. You wouldn't be able to create any other pleasant human beings like yourself".

No I don't hate all South Africans. In fact, one of my dearest friends, Emma is South African. BUT I have been in casual jobs during uni (the past 3 years) where I have dealt with a lot of South Africans. The sad fact is that majority of them have been so unbelievably rude and revolting that I now cringe everytime I meet yet another one with no manners. I feel like slapping them, putting handcuffs on them and then leading a class called "COMMON COURTESY" with electric shocks everytime they make a boo boo. By the same token, when I meet a nice South African here, I am so friendly to them and ask about where they're from and tell them about my friend Emma.

I really do try to avoid stereotyping but God dammit! Why do they keep trying to make it easier?

Oh and P.S. When I got back from my walk I followed him around very obviously giving him shoplifter-treatment. He soon left. PSYCHE!

This made me laugh so loud that others looked at what I was reading. I love it. I love you.

Ha ha ha but you know the scary thing? This was true about 3years ago. If I wasn't so lazy, I would go and research to see if it still is....but I just can't be bothered.

Lissie,

I know a good number of people who'd pay good money for those classes! Sadly none of them are South African or actually lack maners..

I'm guessing it's because they would be happy to be in the presence of the enigmatic Lissie, while handcuffed and being electrocuted.

I dunno, some people eh?

Hi Lissie,

Yes sadly the people I was referring to would have been paying to help cover your electicity and handcuff bills.

Of course they would also be paying to bask in your stupendous aura.
