He wrote ‘If’ after all - you know, stirring British stuff: "If you can keep your head when all about you , Are losing theirs and blaming it on you...." - sounds like a typical Monday morning at the office to me, but I get the point.

It's a pity Wenger didn’t pin that poem up in the Anfield dressing room on Tuesday night. I guess he might have had it in French, although ‘Si’ doesn’t quite have the same resonance and gravitas....

But ‘If’ doesn’t win you the Champions League.

And if only we can keep Robin fit and Cesc happy next season, and if only we sign on a keeper halfway between genteel and three-steins-short-of-a-bierkeller, and if only we throw in a couple of six-foot centrebacks and a Portuguese winger, then we can dream
