We Love... Ministry of Sound - Photos and Videos

I'm exhausted... 22 acts set across 3 venues, was always going to be challenging to see everyone interesting - I started at Metro City around 9:30, at which time the already growing queue was moving nicely along.  A good start! Got inside about half-way through Goodwill's set, and it was clear the crowd was set to party long and hard through the night.  The main bars on the ground floor were easy to get at drink at, so again - well done!

Potbelleez were up next, and I could see why they're so popular... that said it wasn't my scene so I decided to head out for a quick kebab (I hadn't eaten all day mind you!) and then onto The Bakery to catch Ajax. I must say i was very impressed with his set and scratching/mixing skills, and the ample crowd were lapping up every beat on the dancefloor.

All too soon though, Duke Dumont was pluggin the laptop to provide us with the next session of tunes, and it was time for this over-aged raver to head back to Metro's to catch Mr Oizo, who came highly recommended... so I thought!! Queue was still massively long, and word from a couple of people at the front was it would be hours before getting in... f8ck that!

So instead, I strolled on over to Capitol and Amplifier to see what was going on there - I had planned on going a little later in the evening, never mind...  Resin Dogs were getting off a massive crowd in the main room of Capitol. Me, I've never been a hip-hop fan, and the time it took to get a drink was too much for me.

So I headed on out back to wait for Hybrid... and was greeted with the presence of Dabruck and Klein keeping the crowd entertained with a funky electro vibe. Eventually Chris Healings took the stage, which was supposed to be the highlight of my night, signalling the coming of Hybrid, however it seems that nobody else made it...

What was billed as a hybrid gig was little more than Chris hitting us hard with some killer breaks, then turning it down for some more progressive tracks. Admittedly the Perth crowd were looking a little tired and really needed the harder hitting tracks to keep them going, which Healings delivered towards the end of the set. Many were disappointed we didn't get a proper Hybrid show (many thought it was going to be a proper live act, not a DJ set) but in the end, nobody wanted to call it a night...

By 4am, the queue at Metro City had all but gone, so I headed in for the end of the Utah Saints set.  So this is where the crowds went, and they were loving the tunes the Saints were dishing out.  As a finale, they gave us 15 minutes of hard hitting Drum 'n Bass to wrap up the night with, leaving everyone - including this punter - more than satisfied.

Either way he's a great DJ - hope he comes over to Perth for a gig soon.

Seems like I got my wish! tyDi was over for his first show in Perth on Friday night (16-May-08) with Dr Willis for a Generationext Promo gig at Rise nightclub... and I got to meet him!

Given he is pretty much unknown in Perth, he was just hanging out at the bar before his set and was very approachable and happy to talk about what was going on. Actually, he thought he recognised me from somewhere - don't know I've met so many random people in Brisbane over the years. I said the last time I saw him play was on Anzac Day - he was like "where was I then?"

Then I reminded him that he opened for Tiesto, which he said was one of the hardest gigs to do as much of the crowd was there for the headline act and weren't really giving him a chance... not to mention the glowsicks!

We spoke about his recent collaborations, and the production of his new album which is ready to be released, but has apparently been pushed back until August because of the recent Generationext release. tyDi suggests that many people may be surprised by the album when it is released, with around half the 30-odd tracks (I guess it'll be a double!) apparently not being straight up dance tracks.

I asked if with his stellar rise in fame if he was contemplating any offers for residency outside of Australia, but he assures us that he loves Australia and prefers just touring for gigs overseas, leaving the fans wanting for more!

When asked about the upcoming inthemix 50 poll he was quick to play down any suggestion of taking out the #1 spot this year - saying it wasn't yet his time, and many others like Dirty South or Potbellez are more likely to take it out. In fact don't be surprised, he said, if he ends up lower on the list than last year!

I don't know if any of this is news, but I thought I'd share my excitement with you all. I should have interviewed him properly. I wrote down a few questions 2 minutes before leaving the house but should have recorded some answers! He dropped lots of names with respect to who did remixes on his album, and who else he'd been collaborating with, but I don't remember shit now.

Bonus: He signed my CD
Bonus: We did Chartreuse shots!

Legend.

Make up you're own minds - check out his compilation mixes on Generationext House2Hard vol4 or Late Night Edition or catch him next time he's in town! In my minds eye, he is surely legend in the making!

Of course... would have been better if I could remember half the stuff we talked about!
